Portage is located in Columbia County (of which it is the county seat) between Madison and Stevens Point along I-39 on the banks of the Wisconsin River near Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo, Pardeeville, and Lake Wisconsin. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 9,338, an increase of 698 since 1990.
