Wausau is located in Marathon County (of which it is the county seat) between Stevens Point and Tomahawk along US Highway 51 on the banks of the Wisconsin River near Merrill, Mosinee, Rothschild, and Rib Moutain Ski Area. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 36,359, a decrease of 701 since 1990. Wausau is part of the Wausau, Wisconsin metro area.
