Fossil Butte National Monument is located 14 miles west of Kemmerer on Hwy 30. The beds of the Green River contain deposits of the fossils of freshwater fish that were alive 50 million years ago. The formation is one of the world's largest of its kind. A self-guided hike, 2.5 miles long, leads to a historic fossil quarry. Another trail takes visitors through a majestic Aspen tree grove. Ranger-guided hikes around the monument are also available by allotted times or appointment. The surface topography of the Butte is now covered by a high, cold desert with sagebrush dominating the vegetation at lower elevations, aspen and limber pine at the higher elevations. The 8,198 acres include beavers, a variety of birds, mule deer, moose, elk and pronghorns.
