Platte County is in the SW region of Wyoming adjacent to Albany County, Goshen County, Laramie County, and Converse County. There are many water recreational activities available on the reservoir in Glendo State Park. This county is rich in history as well. Two of the most interesting sites in the state, Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site and Register Cliff State Historic Site, are located extremely close to each other just SW of Guernsey. Wheatland is the largest town in the county.

The county seat of Platte County, Wyoming, is Wheatland. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 8,612, an increase of 467 over the 1990 census.
