Notable as one of the first designated Primitive Areas as well as one of the first National Wilderness Areas, the 428,169 acre Bridger Wilderness extends approximately 80 miles along the Continental Divide on the west slope of Wyoming's
Wind River Mountain Range. The Fitzpatrick Wilderness, Wind River Indian Reservation, and Popo Agie Wilderness lie directly east of the Bridger. The Bridger Wilderness is administered by the Pinedale Ranger District on the
Bridger-Teton National Forest. Most of the Wilderness is located within
Sublette County, with a small portion extending into
Fremont County. There are no roads in the Wilderness; motorized and mechanized equipment, including bicycles, is prohibited. The town of Pinedale, 14 miles southwest of Elkhart trailhead, is the closest town to the Wilderness.
