Carpinteria Tar Pits

Search Carpinteria California

Early explorers observed Chumash Indians fashioning canoes here, caulking the planked boats with natural asphalt. The outcroppings of black goo are still visible along the beach. Visitors are treated to spectacular views of the coast and Channel Islands.

This park offers walking trails, vegetation restored as close to its natural state as possible, and spectacular views.

To reach the tar pits take Concha Loma Avenue to Calle Ocho; park at the end of Calle Ocho and walk across the railroad tracks to the lookout point.
