This regionally-themed museum interprets the cultural and natural history of southern Maryland's Chesapeake Bay area through three maritime-oriented exhibits. Visitors will learn about regional Miocene paleontology, typical estuary life on the tidal Patuxent River and adjacent bay, and boat-building skills at the site's Preservation Center and the restoration of historic Chesapeake Bay craft. Exhibits include vessels, models, relics, and fossils from the nearby Calvert Cliffs and other local Miocene-era artifacts; other highlights include the museum centerpiece, the Drum Point Lighthouse, and the Cove Point Lighthouse. Various species of native fish, as well as entertaining river otters, are on display in more than 17 aquarium settings.
A museum store is available; open daily except major holidays.
