Ishpeming

Ishpeming is in Marquette County, and in the Northern Region. This community is located just west of Marquette along US Highway 41 near the Escanaba River and Lake Superior.

In the beginning mining days, when it was first settled in 1856, the site was known as the Lake Superior Location. It took its name from its parent, the Lake Superior Location. In 1862 it received the name of Ishpeming (Chippewa for heaven or high place). Captain Gilbert d. Johnson became the settlement's first postmaster on February 17, 1863. In 1871 this area was incorporated as a village, and as a city in 1873.
