The city was settled by Scottish immigrants in the mid-19th century. It has two harbors known as Little Tub and Big Tub - havens for ships during autumn gales. Dozen of ships have foundered in the treacherous channel to the north, and they are preserved in the frigid waters of Georgian Bay
. The unusual clarity of the water makes Tobermory a favorite destination for scuba divers. The area offers excellent fishing, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. It is at the terminus of the Bruce Trail and visitors can find a variety of outfitters to provide for their recreational needs.
