Located within the Portage Glacier, the visitor center includes an orientation area, exhibits and an observatory. A 20-minute film, "Voices From The Ice" is shown hourly. One of the most popular activities is the iceworm safari.

Forest Service naturalists are available to provide information about Chugach National Forest resources. There are displays on glaciers and natural history of the area. Schedules of hikes and programs are posted.

The center is open daily in summer, weekends in winter. Portage Glacier Rd joins Seward Hwy at Mile 78.9.
