The Fraser River flows unequally through the lower Fraser Valley. Most of the land and most of the population are on the south side of the river, through which Highway 1 (The Transcanada Highway) passes from Hope until almost to Vancouver.

Highway 7 follows the narrow north side of the valley. After taking leave of Highway 1 near Hope, it connects the communities of Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs (almost), Harrison Mills, Mission, Maple Ridge, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody before entering Vancouver through Burnaby.
