D-Q University is a an accredited two-year post secondary institution of learning, dedicated to the progress of Indigenous peoples through education. It is designated as a tribally-controlled community college under the Tribally Controlled Community Colleges Assistance Act. The college derives its name from two important figures from Native history. The "D" stands for the name of the Great Peacemaker who inspired the founding of the Iroquois Confederacy; the full name symbolized by the "D" is used only in a religious context. The "Q" represents Quetzalcoatl, an Aztec prophet, who symbolizes the principles of wisdom and self-discipline. D-Q University is located on Road 31, seven miles west of the city of Davis, California, in rural Yolo County. Davis is located 14 miles west of Sacramento and 72 miles northeast of San Francisco. D-Q University has a total enrollment of about 460.

The fair offered premiums (prizes) for its competitions and included such agricultural exhibits such as 2-inch-long peanuts, 72-pound beets and a 10-pound carrot that was longer than 3 feet. Horseracing was part of that first fair and has continued to be a part of the fair ever since.
