National Museum of the American Indian |
As of June 2003, the George Gustav Heye Center in New York City is the location of the American Indian Museum, with its collection in the process of being moved to a new, state-of-the-art collections facility in Suitland, Maryland. In 1999, construction began on a new museum on the National Mall in Washington DC. Located at 4th Street and Independence Avenue, just east of the National Air and Space Museum, this new facility will be open to the public in 2004, and will be a center for ceremonies, performances, and educational programs, as well as an exhibition space for Indians arts, history, and material culture.
The Heye Center will remain an NMAI facility for public programs and exhibitions in New York.
