Located on Jackson Place, this house was designed by Benjamin Latrobe and built in 1819 for naval hero Commodore Stephen Decatur. Erected shortly after the White House and St. John's Church, Decatur House was the first private residence on Layfayette Square. In the 1870s General Edward Beale bought the house and remodeled it in the Victorian style. The house which has long been a center for social and political activity, contains memorabilia from the Decatur and Beale eras in period rooms. Open Tuesday through Friday 10am-3pm, Saturday and Sunday noon-4pm; closed major holidays.
