United States Holocaust Memorial Museum |
Located on 14th Street, this museum presents the history of the 6 million Jews and millions of others, including Romany, Soviet POWs, Poles, dissidents, homosexuals, Jehovahs Witnesses and the disabled who suffered and died at the hads of the Nazis during their rule of Germany 1933-1945. The three-floor permanent exhibition depicts the story of the Holocaust through artifacts, photographs, film, and oral histories. Part of the mission of the museum is to teach the implications of the Holocaust for contemporary life. To personalize the experience, each visitor is given an identity card bearing the name and picture of a Holocaust victim.
