The Bar Convent Museum outlines the early history of Christianity in the north of England, and the story of Mary Ward, foundress of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Ward was a pioneer of women's education and apostolic religious orders for women. Featured is the Bar Convent Chapel, designed by Thomas Atkinson and built in 1769. The Bar Convent Gallery displays exhibitions covering a wide range of interests; a 45-min video covering the history of the Bar Convent is available for viewing in the Audio Visual Room.
