Haleakala National Park |
The park includes the summit of the dormant volcano that dominates Maui Island as well as the Seven Pools area of Oheo Gulch on the coast beyond Hana. The name means "House of the Sun". There are cabins in the crater that can be reserved in advance. There are also three free tent campgrounds, first come, first served. There are many hiking trails and swimming in the lower pools. No permit is required at the Hosmer Grove and there are no facilities at Oheo Gulch camping area.
It takes two hours to reach the crater from Kihei or Lahaina. From Kahului - Maui, follow Hwys 36, 37, 377 and 378 to park headquarters. The last chance to get gas is Pukalani. For park info and weather updates, contact Haleakala National Park.
