Discovered in 1942, the Spencer Opal Mine is an open pit mine and the only place in North America where opals are plentiful enough to mine commercially.You can look for opals yourself. You can dig at the mini mine seven days a week located at the store on the north end of main street in Spencer or call for open digging dates at the mine. The store has a very large selection of opal jewelry, lapidary supplies, convenience items, RV park and camping area. The store hour are 7:00 - 7:00 seven days a week and is open year round. The mines are located 65 miles north of Idaho Falls on I-15. The headquarters and store are located at the north end of Main Street in Spencer.
