Directly responsible for the growth of
Chicago and other towns along its length, the I&M Canal linked
Lake Michigan with the
Illinois River at
La Salle when it was constructed in 1848. Today, the old towpath is used as a 60-mile hiking, biking and snowmobiling trail.
