Morris, established in 1842, is located in northeastern Illinois in Grundy County (of which it is the county seat) 60 miles southwest of Chicago about 20 miles southwest of Joliet along Highway 47 on the banks of the Illinois River/I & M Canal. Interstate 80 skirts the northern city limits. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 11,477, an increase of 1,203 since 1990.
The town is situated in a recreation-rich area. Within minutes of town are Gebhard Woods State Park, William G. Stratton State Park, Goose Lake Prarie State Natural Area, Des Plaines SFWA, Kankakee River State Park and Silver Springs State Park. In addition, golfers enjoy their outings at Nettle Creek Country Club.
