Calhoun County

Calhoun county is located in southwestern Illinois with its southernmost tip situated at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Illinois River. The county is wholly contained between the two waterways.

The county is named for John C. Calhoun who was a lawyer and statesman and served as Vice President of the U.S. under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. In addition he served under President John Tyler as the Secretary of State.

The county was formed in 1825 from land originally belonging to Pike County. Its county seat is Hardin and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 4,862, a decrease of 460 over the 1990 census.
