Pike county is located in western Illinois along the banks of the Mississippi River. It was created in 1821 and included all the land north of the Illinois River, currently its eastern boundary with Greene County and Scott County. The final boundaries were set in 1825 after ceding most of its territory to other counties.The county is named for Zebulon M. Pike, a General in the War of 1812 and one of the first explorers of the Louisiana Purchase. The county lies just to the east of Hannibal, home of the famous American author and storyteller Mark Twain. The county seat is Pittsfield and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 17,220, a decrease of 357 over the 1990 census.
