Montgomery county is located in central Illinois, SSE of Springfield, the State Capital. The county's final boundaries were set in 1839 when Dane (now Christian County) was established. It is named for Gen. Robert Montgomery who served in the Revolutionary War.

The county seat is Hillsboro and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 31,318, an increase of 590 over the 1990 census.

Although a rural agricultural area, most of the county is no more than an hour's travel from St Louis, Springfield or Decatur.

Natural features include Glenn Shoals Lake, Lake Lou Yeager and Coffeen Lake near Coffeen.
