Tazewell county is located in central Illinois just south of Peoria. It is named for Lyttleton Waller Tazewell, a U.S. Senator from Virginia at the time the county was established.
Although it was created in 1827, the final county boundaries weren't set until 1841. De Witt County, Livingston County, Logan County, Mason County, McLean County and Woodford County were all involved in its metamorphasis.
The county seat, Pekin, lies along the banks of the Illinois River as does East Peoria. The latter is the home port of the "Par-A-Dice Riverboat"--a replica of Robert Fulton's steamboat "Claremont".
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 129,801, an increase of 6,109 over the 1990 census.
