Many places in southern Illinois, with their bald cypress swamps and heron rookeries, are reminiscent of the bayous of the Deep South. The area has rich wetland ecosystems, but also in this part of the state are the wooded hillsides of the
Shawnee National Forest, the intriguing rock formations of
Giant City State Park and
Ferne Clyffe State Park, and the commercial and recreational boat traffic of the
Wabash River,
Ohio River and
Mississippi River's.
Standing as a sentinel in the course of early American history is Fort Massac State Park, situated at the state's southern tip. It was used during the French-Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and even briefly during the Civil War. Its location in the town of Metropolis is also the home turf of "Superman", whose statue is in the town square.
