Old State Capitol

Located on Broadway and Lewis Streets, this National Historic Landmark was the seat of state government 1827-1910. Since extensive restoration, the 50-foot-tall, domed Kentucky River marble structure looks much as it appeared in the 1850s, having escaped scheduled demolition twice. The architectural highlight of this Greek Revival-style building is a self-supporting stone circular stairway in the rotunda; the only successful staircase of its kind in the United States, the staircase has been standing for 167 years.

The Old Capitol Building, home of the Kentucky Historical Society since 1920, now houses a collection of artwork which includes portraits, an extensive collection of Audubon engravings and chromolithographs, as well as displays of furniture and sculpture. Guided and self-guided tours are available; admission to the Old Capitol Building is free to the public. The museum is closed on Mondays.
