White Hall State Historic Site |
This unique and imposing estate house, built in two architectural styles, was the home of emancipationist Cassius Marcellus Clay and served as the center of Green Clay's extensive land and business holdings.
The first section of the 13-acre site, Clermont, was built in the brick Georgian-style by Clay's father in 1798, and reputed to be the 'first of that class' in the country. Clay later placed a new building, White Hall, above and around the existing Clermont; also of brick, the second structure displays an interesting combination of Georgian and Italinate architecture as well as being the first house in the area to incorporate central heating and indoor plumbing.
Tours led by costumed guides are offered which provide a glimpse at 1860s period furnishings and original Clay-estate pieces. Special public events include a Victorian Christmas and Halloween Haunting programs. Picnicking is permitted within the park. Open daily, April through September; hours vary rest of the year.
