Morganton is located in Burke County (of which it is the county seat) between Asheville and Hickory along Interstate 40 on the banks of the Catawba River near Marion, Nebo, Valdese, Lake Rhodiss, Lake James State Park, and the South Mountains State Park. The city is surrounded by rich natural resources which provide pristine water and picturesque mountain ranges with many recreation activities.
