Williamston is located in Martin County (of which it is the county seat) northeast of Greenville, between Washington and Ahoskie along US Highway 13/17 on the banks of the Roanoke River near Windsor, Plymouth, Fort Branch, and the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 5,836, a decrease of 34 since 1990.
