Highlands is located in Monmouth County, in the Gateway Region, southeast of Newark, between Atlantic Highlands and Sea Bright along Highway 36 near the Gateway National Recreation Area. It is situated on the shores of New Jersey's Atlantic seacoast, just off Sandy Hook Bay.
Highlands is part of the Monmouth-Ocean, New Jersey metro area.
