Adams County |
Adams county is located in southwestern Ohio and uses West Union as its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 28,698, an increase of 3,327 over the 1990 census.
Formed in 1797, the county is the third oldest in Ohio and was named for the incumbent President of the United States--John Adams. Manchester, on the Ohio River, was the first white settlement and also the first county seat.
Famous county natives include John A. Cockerill, co-founder of the Washington Post, one of the nation's most influential newspapers of today.
One of the county's main attractions is the Serpent Mound State Memorial in the north county area just south of the Highland county line.
