Hamilton County

Hamilton county, named for Alexander Hamilton and established in 1790, is the state's southwesternmost with Cincinnati, originally called "Losantiville", serving as the county seat. It was the second county created within the Northwest Territory area now known as Ohio and consumed about one-eighth of today's state boundaries. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 840,443, a decrease of 25,785 over the 1990 census.

In the 1830s, word of the area spread as far as Europe. Religious conflicts in Germany and the Irish potato famine of the 1840s were early contributors to the population growth of that era.

At present, the tri-county area supports Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds (originally 'Redlegs') and the National Football League's Bengals.
