Greene county is located in southwestern Ohio just east of Dayton and calls Xenia its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 149,149, an increase of 12,418 over the 1990 census.
The county is named for Gen. Nathaniel Greene, the Revolutionary War hero, and was established in its present boundaries in 1819. Xenia, which was established as the county seat in 1804, is derived from the Greek and signifies "hospitality."
Larger towns in the county include Bellbrook in the southwestern part of the county, Cedarville to the northeast, Fairborn to the northwest, Jamestown to the east and Yellow Springs just east of Fairborn.
