Champaign County

Champaign county is located in the Miami River Valley region of west central Ohio with Urbana serving as the county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 38,572, an increase of 2,553 over the 1990 census.

Scattered settlement began shortly after the Revolutionary War ended with early settlers living in "three-faced camps" consisting of three walls with one side open. Clothing was homemade out of flax or hemp and, except for the coldest winter days when buckskin moccasins might be worn, most everyone went barefoot.

Farmers preferred the high ground to avoid the swamping of the lowlands during heavy rains. In addition, it was important to locate the homestead near a viable spring.

As an historical note: "Johnny Appleseed" (John Chapman) was a frequent visitor/short-term resident here in the 1830s.
