Clayton is located in southeastern Oklahoma in Pushmataha County along SR 2 and U.S. Highway 271 on the banks of the Kiamichi River just south of Sardis Lake.
In addition to Sardis Lake, other outdoor recreation comes in the form of 66-acre Clayton Lake, the focal point for Clayton Lake State Park. 18,000-acre Pushmataha Wildlife Management Camping Area is open for in-season hunting of deer, quail, squirrel and wild turkey while you can fish any of 34 ponds and a stream.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 680, an increase of 44 since 1990.
