Okmulgee is located in eastern Oklahoma in Okmulgee County (of which it is the county seat) south of Tulsa along U.S. Highway 62/75 and SR 56 just north of the Deep Fork of the Canadian River.
The town has been the capital of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation since 1868. The Creek Council House Museum a sandstone structure which has been faithfully restored, once housed meetings of the elite Creek Lighthorsemen. Today the house serves as a museum and ceremonial capitol. In addition, the Nuyaka Mission Site is a nice side trip.
Recreation in the area revolves around the Okmulgee Lake, Dripping Springs Lake, Okmulgee/Dripping Springs State Park complex just west of town.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 13,981, an increase of 540 since 1990.
