Okmulgee County

Okmulgee county, first populated by the Creek Nation in the 1820s, is located in eastern Oklahoma with the town of Okmulgee serving as the county seat.

Major waterways and recreation areas include Okmulgee Lake, Dripping Springs Lake and Okmulgee/Dripping Springs State Park. In addition, the southeast corner of the county abuts Eufaula Lake. The North Canadian River slips in and out of the county on its southern county line.

County attractions include the Creek Council House and National Capitol in Okmulgee and the Nuyaka Mission Site near the western line. Other sites to interest the history buff are the Nuyaka Mission Site just outside the county seat city limits and the Isparhecher House and Grave near Beggs. Isparhecher was one of the important Creek Chiefs of the Dawes Commission era.

The county population on July 1, 1999, was 38,788, an increase of 2,298 over the 1990 census.
