Osage County |
Osage county, the largest county in the state, is a rural county located in north central Oklahoma on the Kansas state line with Pawhuska serving as the county seat. It was created in 1907 from Osage Nation lands with its name being a corruption by the French of the tribal name "Wah-Sha-She."
Large expanses of prairie are dotted with rivers, lakes and recreation areas including Lake Hulah and Wah-Sha-She State Park in the northeast; Bluestem Lake and Osage Hills State Park toward the center of the county; Birch Lake and Skiatook Lake in the southeast; Walnut Creek State Park in the south; the Arkansas River, which forms all but a few miles of the southern and western county line and a small portion of Kaw Lake in the northwest section of the county.
Other county attractions include 39,000-acre Tall Grass Prairie Preserve in the north central section where a large herd of bison roam freely and the Osage County Historical Museum located in Pawhuska.
