Pawnee county is located in north central Oklahoma with the town of Pawnee serving as the county seat. The mixture of cowboys, the Wild West aura and Native Americans gave the region a remarkable blending of cultures which was portrayed by the county's most famous personality, [pawnbili] and his Wild West Show.
The Arkansas River, which it shares with Osage County, forms almost the entire northern and eastern county lines as it travels its souteasterly course. Other major water in the county is Keystone Lake on the Creek County county line in the southeast and Sooner Lake, which is shared with Noble County, in the northwest corner of the county.
Historic sites within the county include the Blue Hawk Peak Ranch just outside Pawnee, the Mullendore Mansion in Cleveland and the Ralston Opera House in Ralston.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 16,548, an increase of 973 over the 1990 census.
