Once the major north-south arterial highway on the West Coast, Highway 99 has been largely replaced by Interstate 5. Between Eugene and the California border, only short sections of it remain, notably a section that runs south from Medford through Talent and Ashland. Another scenic section runs on the south side of the Rogue River east of Grants Pass. North of Eugene, the highway maintains a substantial transportation role, dividing at Junction City in Highway 99E and Highway 99W.
