North Powder

North Powder is located in Union County southeast of La Grande, between Union and Interstate 84 along Hwy 237. This community takes its name from the North Powder River (a tributary of the Powder River), which is an English translation of Chinook terms for the soil along the stream. North Powder was a pioneer station and has had a post office since 1866.

Local attractions throughout the surrounding area include: Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Catherine Creek State Park, Red Bridge State Park, Hilgard Junction State Park, Umatilla National Forest, Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, Anthony Lakes Ski Resort, Wolf Creek Dam, Pilcher Creek Dam and the Thief Valley Reservoir.
