Established in January of 1852, the county bordering California in Southern Oregon covers 2,800 square miles and as of July 1, 1999, the population was 175,822, an increase of 29,435 over the 1990 census.
The Jackson Countyseat is Medford, which lies on Interstate 5 as do the other major towns, Ashland, noted as a cultural center, and Jacksonville, with its famous historic district.
