The South Carolina State Museum is an ever-changing, innovative institution "reflecting the essence and diversity" of South Carolina. The museum packs a lot of hands-on exhibits into four large floors in its beautiful and historic building beside the scenic Congaree River in
Columbia. The museum is housed the renovated 1893 Columbia Mill, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was the world's first totally-electric textile mill. The history of the museum is a fascinating evolution from this historic mill to the Palmetto State's treasure house that it has become.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
