Originally called the 'Gold Hill Lode,' this mine was discovered in 1882 by two German immigrants who worked the mine until 1914. Informative underground 45-minute guided tours of the historic gold mine include a free sample of gold ore. A short videotape describing area history and displays are exhibited at the on-site museum. Gold panning is offered. Group rates available, reservations required for groups of 15 or more. Located just a few miles from Mount Rushmore, the Big Thunder Mine is open daily from May through the end of September.
