Lake Thompson is South Dakota's largest natural lake, three miles long and two miles wide, covering 18,000 acres. In the 1930s, the lake was completely dry and was used for pasture. In 1980, the 'lake' was a 9,000 acre shallow marsh. The heavy rains and snowmelt in 1985 filled the lake to over 20 feet deep in some spots. Fourteen years later, this area became a park.

Lakes Henry, Preston and Whitewood are near by.
