The park is noted for its unusual formations of red and pink quartzite on both banks of Split Rock Creek, which runs through the park. Outcroppings range from shelves and pinnacles to 50-foot vertical cliffs. Another unusual park feature is the presence of pipestone; Palisades is one of the few places in the country where this dark red mineral is found.
Recreational opportunities within the park include camping, picnicking, rock climbing, and hiking on one of three self-guiding trails. Other facilities include picnic areas, a playground, amphitheater, interpretive displays, and sand volleyball court. The park is open year-round.
