The Southern Region of Nevada is home to the state's most popular destination, Las Vegas. There's no place in the world like Las Vegas. And it's no exaggeration to say that in Las Vegas, visitors will find a nearly unlimited variety of options for entertainment and recreation. Amusement parks, 24-hour gaming and star-studded entertainment are a few of the many options in Las Vegas. Another very popular location for 24-hour gaming with endless hours of excitement is Reno. While having become one of the nations top vacation destinations, Reno provides a full spectrum of recreational opportunities and entertainment to choose from. Beyond the dazzling lights of Las Vegas and Reno lie Nevada's untamed landscapes. Mountain biking, rock climbing, snowmobiling and back country skiing opportunities are abundant throughout the more than 300 mountain ranges and peaks in Nevada. The highest point is the 13,143-foot Boundary Peak, south of Hawthorne, within the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The second highest is 13,064-foot Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park. Challenging and scenic mountain-bike trails are located at Lake Tahoe and close to such towns as Boulder City, Blue Diamond, Austin, Goldfield, Winnemucca and Battle Mountain. Skiing and snowboarding probably don't come to mind when referring to Nevada, however, the sport has become more popular here than ever before. Lake Tahoe has more than two dozen of the finest slopes and skiing facilities in the state, including both Heavenly and Squaw valleys. But Lake Tahoe isn't the only place to find great skiing in Nevada. Those exploring snowy peaks are usually surprised to learn that they can become spoiled at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort, situated about 40 miles northwest of Las Vegas, in the Spring Mountains on the powdery slopes of Mount Charleston (11,915-foot summit). The Northern Region of Nevada, more commonly known as Cowboy Country, also offers an ultimate skiing and snowboarding experience (with heli-drop-offs) within the Ruby Mountains. Within Nevada's Mojave Desert, thrill seekers can enjoy climbing the multi-colored faces at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Camping and 30 miles of hiking and biking trails are also available throughout Red Rock Canyon's 197,000 acre recreation area. Nearby at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, there's a tree shaded place to retreat from the desert heat in the summer months. The park offers many outdoor concerts and performances at the cultural events pavilion. Nevada is is home to more than 30 State Parks, many of which provide numerous camping and picnicking areas. Lakes and rivers in Nevada are a water lover's paradise. Scuba diving, sailing, fishing, waterskiing, windsurfing and many other activities can be enjoyed at lakes such as Pyramid, Walker, Mead, Mohave and Tahoe. Whitewater enthusiasts will find runs on the Colorado, Carson and Truckee rivers. Hunting in Nevada offers many big game species, such as Mule deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, mountain lion and mountain goat. All of Nevada's big game hunting is on a tag-draw system. Applications are accepted from about mid-March to the third week of April. Resident deer hunters will usually draw a tag once every two to three years and only one in four hunters will get a tag in any given year. As a result, Nevada offers some of the finest mule deer hunting anywhere, with buck to doe ratios in most areas being from 25 to 40 bucks per 100 does. Nevada boasts excellent upland and waterfowl hunts for dove, blue and ruffed grouse, Himalayan snow partridge, quail, chukar, Hungarian partridge, pheasants, sage grouse, turkey, crow, mallards and geese. Nevada has more than 100 great fishing waters within its borders, with over 25 select game fish species to gear for. Make sure to check current game regulations before all outdoor excursions through the Nevada Department of Fish and Wildlife. Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant throughout many of Nevada's State Parks and National Wildlife Refuges. |
