Yorktown Battlefield |
Located on the eastern end of the Colonial Parkway, the site enshrines an area where the last major battle of the War for Independence was fought. In the spring of 1781, following his campaign in the Carolinas, British general Charles Cornwallis led his army into Virginia and selected Yorktown as a base at which to establish a port for British naval activity. A Celebration of Victory, held every October 19, commemorates General George Washington's victory here and the surrender of Cornwallis.
