Named one of the finest wildlife viewing areas in Wyoming, this region contains five distinguishable vegetation zones ranging from dry basin to mountain meadow. The availablity of water contributes to the abundant wildlife. Frequently seen mammals include the marmot, mule deer, jack and cottontail rabbit, beaver, mink, fox, coyote, badgers, weasels, and prairie dogs. 100 species of birds inhabit the park, and several snake species make their homes here. Sometimes you can even find a few scorpions. Camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, four-wheeling, mountain biking, fossil hunting, and about every other activity are popular attractions. A fossil dinosaur track site has been uncovered near Shell, displaying hundreds of dinosaur tracks.
