Ten Sleep Preserve |
Home to seven plant communities, 100 bird species, and a variety of animals, the Ten Sleep Preserve also includes a rugged collection of canyons, uplands, and forests. The spotted bat is a rare animal that can sometimes be seen here, and a number of unique plants, found only in the Bighorns, smatter the countryside. Ancient pictographs and Indian gathering sites feature an explanatory history of the Indians native of the area. The management of this 8,500 acre Nature Conservancy Preserve includes biological inventory and monitoring, as well as livestock grazing, educational programs and recreational activities. The area is open to the public from May through the middle of October. Hiking, fishing and swimming, and other day-long trips are always free; however, if you wish to camp overnight or for a longer period of time, a small fee is required. This Nature Conservancy is a private, non-profit organization. The preserve is located on Hwy 16, Cloud Peak Skyway, near Ten Sleep Canyon.
